These basic mitigation steps will keep unnecessary and costly claims out of the picture. A burst pipe can flood your home, cause damage to your home and personal property, and cause future problems like mold and wood rot.
1. Wrap Exposed Pipes
Pipes in and outside of your home may have lost their insulation wrapping or never had it in the first place. For pipes inside your home the exposed piping underneath sinks is especially vulnerable. Make sure you keep these insulated.
Sometimes due to a construction error, or through wear and tear, you may have an exposed pipe on the outside of your home. It is extremely important that these pipes are well insulated. Talking to a licensed contractor about mitigation is also suggested.
2. Have your sinks drip
Nobody likes a leaky faucet, but when the temperatures drop below freezing it is always a smart idea to keep the water in your pipes flowing. This allows it less of an opportunity to freeze, similar to the way a lake will freeze well before a river.
3. Keep your Heat ON
Winter time is full of holidays and vacations. Anytime you leave the home make sure your thermostat is set to AT LEAST 65 degrees. Keep all of your sink cabinets open to take advantage of the heat, and for extended periods of absence, turning off your water is never a bad idea.
Colorado is full of fun due to the extreme weather it has on both sides of the calendar year. Make sure you take the appropriate steps to keep your insurance costs down next year!
