In our series on the major components of bar and tavern insurance, we now discuss the second, liquor liability coverage.
General liability insurance always excludes coverage for liquor-related claims. Many bar owners don’t think that their bartenders would over-serve a customer, but it happens. It doesn’t even have to be the bartender at fault. The patron could be sipping on a bottle of booze that they snuck in and were only served one beer at the bar. If that customer drives home and gets in a car accident, you can bet that the family of the injured party will come looking for restitution. If the bar doesn’t have liquor liability coverage, the owner could be on the hook for the settlement, costing them everything that they’ve worked their whole life to build.
